Lavern Subirats - La Granada
Among mountain streams, gullies, and vineyards
The landscapes along this stage are typical of the Penedès plain, with soft, slightly undulating soils, marked by small hills, streams and brooks, and where the presence of vines is becoming more and more noticeable.
The route starts at the Lavern - Subirats train station and heads towards the nearby church of Sant Pere de Lavern. From here you follow the Can Bas lane, which goes down to the ford that crosses the Lavernó stream. The gravel route continues along the BV-2429 road and the C-243a to avoid the Lavernó stream. Both routes meet again to reach the modest but charming Romanesque church of Sant Joan Salerm, located next to the Can Bas winery.
The route follows the Pla del Penedès lane, which leaves after a bit to turn left towards the Can Bas stream along a farm road that leads to the village of Can Cartró. On leaving Can Cartró, cross the bridge over the BV-2155 road that crosses the Santa Fe stream, where the boundaries of the municipalities of Santa Fe del Penedès, Subirats and Avinyonet del Penedès meet. After crossing the bridge, turn right onto a path that leads to the vineyards of La Garrofa and La Barberana. Those are extensive plains that confirm the change towards more gentle landscapes. The gravel route continues along the BV-2155 towards El Pla del Penedès, turns left onto the BV-2156 towards Santa Fe del Penedès and then turns left again onto the Botins lane until it rejoins the track at Mas Messeguer.
Along the Barberana path you reach Mas Messeguer, where you turn left onto the Botins lane, reaching a townlet that you leave behind to reach Casa Vermella, an abandoned farmhouse near which the Roman remains of the Torre site were found. After turning right at the Casa Vermella, the route passes by the well of l'Horta, a thousand-year-old well with a large flow of water. This is the start of the Horta lane, which climbs up to La Granada.
You enter La Granada through the north gate of the old wall, right in the old part of the town, where you will find a monumental complex formed by the church of Sant Cristòfol, the house of Castlà and the remains of a 10th century castle. A little further on, in the Plaça de la Font, you can continue the route to the train station, to finish the stage, or load the next track towards Vilafranca del Penedès.
Lavern - Subirats and La Granada train stations.
Leaving the Lavern - Subirats train station, if you are on a bicycle it is forbidden to make a left turn, you must continue right to the roundabout. If you are on foot, you can continue along the hard shoulder. Be careful at the junction of the C-243a road, where traffic is usually heavier, and on the BV-2155 stretch, where you cross the bridge over the Santa Fe stream.
