In ancient times, travellers along the Via Augusta would find cylindrical columns called milestones at each Roman mile (1,481 metres). These could reach up to three metres in height and were engraved with the distance to the nearest city and the name of the emperor responsible for the construction or renovation of the road.
Nowadays, along the Via Augusta Penedès route you can find modern reinterpretations of the ancient milestones. These are steel columns with a concrete interior, where the main destinations along the route are engraved on the surface.
In addition, each milestone includes illustrated informative information about Roman culture and technology. Details of everyday life can be found, such as clothing, footwear and housing, as well as aspects related to military life, cities, means of transport and, of course, the cultivation of vines, which has played a fundamental role in the history and development of the Penedès.
Small milestones are placed at the crossroads to indicate that the Via Augusta Penedès passes through them. These yellow circular milestones, inspired by Roman coins and bearing the logo that identifies this route, are placed on the various signposts along the network of paths in the Penedès.
